I've been fixing and securing PCs and PC networks since 1992. In my viewpoint, the best mix of software for pathogen protection and firewall is Avast Private Edition and Section Alarm Private Edition ( FREE ). Here's why : Section Alarm, unlike any of the private firewalls excepting Norton, won't only block inward bound requests, but also unapproved outgoing requests.
These unauthorized outgoing requests are usually malicious software browser hijacks or trojan horses attempting to give control over your personal computer to another user online. The second is that it does adaptive stealthing of port 145.
This permits it to stay "stealthed " while permitting you to have functionality for port 145 ( IDENT ) for local networking and IRC services.Look up "Shields Up", to find out how good your firewall is. Then, try Area Alarm, and test it. You'll find that everything is in "Stealth Mode". This means when a hacker comes across your IP number, he sees... Empty space. It is like an ideal Romulan Cloaking machine. No residual antiprotons or tachyon emissions.
So let me cap :-
* It is free.
* Outgoing Firewall for trojans and adware hijacks.
* Adaptive Stealth of port 145.
* It is free. Now, I suggest Avast for pathogen protection for a few significant reasons :
1 ) It's resident scanner is glorious: If you have issues with your MP3 device, you prolly set the sensitiveness to "High " rather than "Standard". That is due to the fact that it is scanning each of your MP3 files before they play. That is security.
2 ) Boot Time Scanner: This is Urgent, NO OTHER Programme HAS THIS. When I fixed PCs before XP, I might boot from a dos disk, load F-PROT , and check for viruses UNDERNEATH windows. See, many viruses will rape pathogen protection programs. However, with Avast, you've got a Boot Level scanner, which should scan for viruses before any non Safe Mode programs load. So , you get a clean, uninterrupted scan. You may even do boot time file erasure, for those determined pathogen files that refuse to be removed.
3 ) It is free: Therefore these products ( a ) have features that the contest does not ( b ) do not have weaknesss that the contest does, and ( c ) is free, versus costly. However I have only been doing this for fifteen years. No necessity to trust me at my word. Try it yourself.
