There are lots of Net Security tools available in the market. Many of them are superb. But still, none is ideal. It can not be. The best protection is in your own hands. Follow a controlled approach while using Web services.
1) Use caution about using MS Outlook.Outlook is more at the mercy of worms than other email programs, unless you have efficient antivirus programs running.Use Pegasus or Thunderbird ( by Mozilla ), or an internet-based programme like Hotmail or Yahoo.
2) Take special care while handling e-mail attachments. Use caution about attachments with a double extension ,eg .txt.vb or .jpg.exe, as the system will only recognise the extension to the extreme right, and run the file as such. Double extensions are usually a good indicator the file is malignant.
3) Don't use disks that folks gave you, even from work. The disk may be infected with a pathogen. Naturally, you can run a pathogen scan on it first to take a look at it, but AV programs aren't one hundred percent effective.
4) Do not download software from just any web site. If it's a credible site that you trust, you are most likely safe. The threat is not just from software ; even other file types like .txt, .doc, .xml can have diseases.
5) Watch out when surfing. You could get a noxious script from a page without even getting a caution. Modify your Browser settings for optimum safety.
6) Try and balance paranoia with commonsense. A few individuals get truly strange about viruses, adware, for example. It is just a computer! Back up your information and follow these steps, and it should not be a serious issue.
7) Set up your download boss to scan a download first before you open it. When you click to download a file from Web , sometimes browser gives 2 options. To reserve it on the Disk or To Open the file with the default programme. Always select the 1st option, because, it guarantees the download is first scanned with your antivirus, before saving it on the disk.
